'Battleship' trailer - It's like Transformers meets the open sea

If you loved the Transformers movies, you’re going to love this! At least, that’s the message I’m getting after watching the new trailer for Peter Berg’s Battleship. In some ways, it makes sense. Both are based on Hasbro toys. It’s just that I distinctly remember Battleship being about two warring armada’s, not a few ships and a ton of transforming aliens. Clearly, I’m behind the times.

The first trailer for the movie introduced the Liam Neeson Vs. Aliens theme, but this one kicks it right into Michael Bay territory. The aliens transform, the soundtrack has those thumping dissonant waves, and there are a ton of slow-motion explosions. Big explosions. See if you can spot Rihanna in there too. She’s chosen Battleship for her acting debut. What a choice.

As terrible as the concept is, I couldn’t help but see the Transformers movies, so I’m sure I’ll see this. A part of me hopes that they are Decepticons. At least that would make more sense. Well, it would make no sense, but more than the board game movie does now. It could be Hasbro’s Avengers. If they could somehow work in Nerf, Monopoly, Connect Four, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Jenga, or Candy Land, we’d be good to go. Hungry Hungry Hippos writes itself into the story. They’re already in the water. A simple interdimensional portal should take them to Candy Land, and they could end the movie playing a worldwide game of Risk with the aliens.

What do you think? Do I have a great movie idea on my hands? Interested in Battleship

Here’s the trailer.

Battleship hits theaters in May 2012.
