Fright Night review - vampires are such assholes

Vampires are not the ideal neighbor. They'll hit on your mom, bring girls over at all hours of the night, and if you try and make a fuss, they'll kill you and your entire family. Hell, they might just kill you anyway. If you live miles outside of Las Vegas in a small neighborhood bordered by nothing but miles of desert, a bad neighbor can really get away with just about anything. Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) and his mother Jane (Toni Collette) learn this the hard way. There new neighbor's name is Jerry (Colin Farrell) and boy is he a huge douche.

Fright Night is Disturbia meets Zombieland meets, well, vampires. And the mix is perfect. The characters are fresh, the film is suspenseful, the villain is calculatingly playful, and the action is thrilling. There have been a heap of crappy movies starring the undead in the last few years, most notably films like Legion (or anything starring Paul Bettany). Fright Night is different. While the plot doesn't sound inventive from a birds eye view—a kid has to battle his vampire neighbor—it's full of fun surprises and a sharp sense of humor.

Heath Ledger in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (Trailer and Poster)

This is an odd one. Even though Heath Ledger died during the filming of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus about two years ago, the film was finished anyway. How, you ask? Well, they rewrote it so that Heath Ledger's character, Tony, transformed into different people each time he entered a different realm. Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell will each have the lead for a portion of the film. Is this a good idea? Man, I don't know. This story certainly seems odd enough to accommodate it though. Terry Gilliam directed and co-wrote the film. He directed and many classic Monty Python films, including The Life of Brian and Monty Python & The Holy Grail.

Doctor Parnassus is a pretty odd concept, but here we go. Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) is a 1,000-year-old man (I'd be a doctor too, if I were that old) running a travelling theater show. But instead of the usual magic act, the Doctor's show actually takes its audience on a journey to different dimensions and realities using a magic mirror. Unfortunately, to make his Imaginarium possible, Parnassus made a deal with the devil (Tom Waits). He must not have paid up or something, because soon his daughter is stolen and it's up to Tony (Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell) to find her by travelling through the worlds of the Imaginarium. Here's the trailer (after the jump).
