THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS is whatever you wish it to be

Never, never, never make a deal with the devil. The devil doesn't care about winning and losing, he just wants to play. Sadly, Doctor Parnassus learns this the hard way. The Imaginarium is a film from the warped mind of Terry Gilliam, made stranger still by the passing of Heath Ledger midway through production. It's a beautiful, creative, perplexing ride through the mind of its creator, incomprehensible at times and downright ludicrous at others. Still, like The Box, if you're able to save the questions for later and enjoy the gorgeous, strange trip, you'll be better off for it.

From Shakespeare to screen: How 10 Things I Hate About You fails to Tame the Shrew

A few weeks ago, I heard that the Heath Ledger/Julia Stiles career launcher 10 Things I Hate About You (directed by Gil Junger) is actually a modern remake of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.  I saw 10 Things back when it was new (10 years ago) and didn’t think it was too bad, but I also didn’t think it was trying to be modern Shakespeare. So, instead of just hearing this news like a normal person, I decided to watch and read them both to see if 10 Things is actually anything like The Taming of the Shrew.

Heath Ledger in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (Trailer and Poster)

This is an odd one. Even though Heath Ledger died during the filming of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus about two years ago, the film was finished anyway. How, you ask? Well, they rewrote it so that Heath Ledger's character, Tony, transformed into different people each time he entered a different realm. Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell will each have the lead for a portion of the film. Is this a good idea? Man, I don't know. This story certainly seems odd enough to accommodate it though. Terry Gilliam directed and co-wrote the film. He directed and many classic Monty Python films, including The Life of Brian and Monty Python & The Holy Grail.

Doctor Parnassus is a pretty odd concept, but here we go. Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) is a 1,000-year-old man (I'd be a doctor too, if I were that old) running a travelling theater show. But instead of the usual magic act, the Doctor's show actually takes its audience on a journey to different dimensions and realities using a magic mirror. Unfortunately, to make his Imaginarium possible, Parnassus made a deal with the devil (Tom Waits). He must not have paid up or something, because soon his daughter is stolen and it's up to Tony (Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell) to find her by travelling through the worlds of the Imaginarium. Here's the trailer (after the jump).
