LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS is too epic for its own good (review)

Rating:  (Mediocre)

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole intends to be an epic, like Lord of the Rings for families. On paper, it has enough slow-mo shots, big fights, evil villainny, and travel to be such a story. On film, it falls short. While beautifully animated and intimately detailed, this adventure tries so hard to be epic that it's kind of a bore. And don't even get me started on the science of it all, or lack thereof.

Gimmick alert! Owl City records theme song to owl movie

Genius! That's what the execs must have said when Johnny Marketer came up with this idea. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole is an animated adventure from the team behind Happy Feet. Owl City is a guy who imitates The Postal Service to great financial success. So I guess it comes as no surprise that he'd be open to gimmicks like this. Being a fan of The Postal Service, I must admit to enjoying the sound of Owl City. I mean, it's a dead-on ripoff. But still, not a cool way to establish yourself Adam R. Young.

Music politics aside, here is the new theme song for Legend of the Guardians. It's about flying in the sky...

New trailers galore: The Smurfs, Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Owls of Ga'Hoole, Centurion, Never Let Me Go, and Middle Men (a film about early internet porn)

Trailers seem to come in bundles these days. I was planning to post one or two, but kept seeing more new ones float around, so here we are. Oddest trailer of the bunch is The Smurfs. I remain unconvinced that this isn't a terrible idea. Biggest budget probably goes to Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. Movie that Russell Crowe should be in is Centurion (it's a bit violent). Never Let Me Go looks the most fascinating, but is clearly aiming for awards. Middle Men makes me wish I was smarter during the dot com boom. I could have made millions!

Are you a fan of mystic owls? The new LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS trailer is for you

It's official: Hollywood studios will make a computer generated movie out of any animal on the planet. Nothing is off limits. Legend of the Guardians is based on the first entry of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole book series by author Kathryn Lasky. It follows a young orphaned owl who embarks on an adventure to find a group of legendary noble owls in a giant tree far, far away. The books must be fairly popular. There are 15 novels in the series and a full owl language you can learn, should you feel like wasting a significant portion of your life learning a language that owls speak in a modestly successful fictional book series.

The more realistic these animated animal movies get, the more they creep me out. It's like watching a live demonstration of the uncanny valley hypothesis. This film comes from the studio behind Happy Feet, which suffered the same problem, and is directed by Zack Snyder, best known for 300 and Watchmen. Legend of the Guardians hits theaters September 24, 2010.
