'The Three Musketeers' review - airships, explosions, and Matrix slow-mo

I vaguely remember reading The Three Musketeers when I was young and, honestly, I remember The Three Amigos a lot better. Try as I might though, I can't recall flying pirate ships with giant blimps attached to them. I didn't know the musketeers dabbled in science fiction. Paul W.S. Anderson's version of the classic trio is fairly harmless and shouldn't offend anyone, but it doesn't pay much tribute to its brand. Like the Resident Evil flicks, this movie starts out accurate, but ends up veering into the ridiculous fairly quickly. Unfortunately, it's lacking in fun as well. Mix the world of Pirates of the Caribbean with the insanity of the Resident Evil movies and the slow-mo of The Matrix and you've got 90 percent of The Three Musketeers. Add two teenage love stories and you've seen it all.

RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE is a mindless 3D slow-mo shockfest (review)

Rating:  (Passable)

If you think you've seen it all, hold on to your colostomy bags, because Resident Evil: Afterlife is about to blow you away! Not only is Paul W.S. Anderson--the series writer and helmer of the 2002 original--back to direct, he's brought a horde of upgrades to the series! Check it out!

It's got:

  • Big outdoor cinematic shots
  • Tons of bullet-time shots, circa 1999
  • An Emilia Earhart plane
  • Upgraded "Las Plagas" (Progenitor) zombies with fangy faces ala Blade II
  • Digging zombies
  • A 10 foot tall axe-hammer zombie
  • Boss fights
  • Wentworth Miller trapped in a prison cell (poor guy)
  • A mind-controlling chest device (RE5)
  • 3D!!!!

With gimmicks like these, who needs anything else? Resident Evil: Afterlife is more a series of zombie-defying 3D scenarios than a real movie, but is anyone complaining?

RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE trailer is 3D-eriffic

Every few years a new Resident Evil movie comes out with a great trailer attached to it. They always look good. When they come out, they're always disappointing. They are not terrible, but they ain't good. For this fourth movie, series writer Paul W.S. Anderson (Event Horizon, Mortal Kombat) is stepping in to direct--his first time since the 2002 original. As usual, Milla Jovovich stars as the super-woman Alice.

I have to say, yet again, this looks pretty cool. Better yet, it actually looks like the video game series that inspired it. Oddly, there are a lot of great villains in this trailer--including a golum of some kind--but not one zombie. It looks like a movie full of boss fights. In any case, it looks like good, Matrix-ey fun. Hopefully, they don't go too nuts with the 3D. Resident Evil: Afterlife hits theaters September 10, 2010.
