35% of indie video rental stores have tanning beds

The video rental business has seen better days. With kiosk rental services like Red Box and online streaming services like Netflix eating into profits, even big chains like Hollywood Video and Blockbuster video are dying off. So what is an independent video rental store to do? Well, apparently it might be wise to buy a few tanning beds. More than 3,500 of the 10,000 or so independent rental stores in the U.S. are trying to tan away their declining revenue, according to an estimate by the Video Buyers Group.

Blockbuster Video to file for bankruptcy

Dark days are ahead for the once king of video rentals. Blockbuster Video plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the middle of September in an attempt to manage roughly $1 billion in debt and get out of leases for hundreds of its rental stores. Blockbuster has lost more than $1.1 billion since 2008 and has closed 1,000 stores in the last year.
