'Red Tails' review - The dogfights are amazing, but the script never takes off

During World War II, the United States military was racially segregated much like the rest of the country. The “Tuskagee Airmen,” or 332nd Fighter Group, were the only African Americans allowed to pilot during the war. They were awesome and earned much acclaim from their missions in Italy and their work protecting fleets of bombers across Europe. Red Tails (IMDB page), produced by George Lucas, is an attempt to tell their story. If you’re looking for an honest retelling though, you’ll have to look elsewhere. Red Tails spends most of its screen time concentrating on aerial battles and grand speeches about racism, but fails to show the actual struggles these men all went through under the rule of Jim Crow.

Stringer Bell to star in Cross, based on a James Patterson novel

Idris Elba, who is amazing as Stringer Bell in HBO's The Wire, will play Dr. Alex Cross in Cross, based on a James Patterson novel, according to Deadline. The novel, part of a murder mystery series, has Cross tracking down a serial rapist who may have murdered his pregnant wife. Production is set to begin next Spring.

I've finally gotten around to watching The Wire and it's given me a new appreciation for the talents of Elba. There are few villains who are more calculating and manipulative than Stringer Bell. Elba played an abrasive boss in NBC's The Office a couple seasons ago as well. On the big screen, he's appeared in 28 Weeks Later, American Gangster, RocknRolla, The Losers, and will appear in Thor and Takers in the near future. Not bad. Another fact I didn't know: he's British.

For those who haven't seen The Wire, do yourself a favor and watch it.
