'Underworld: Awakening' poster and trailer - Kate Beckinsale returns

A new poster is out for Underworld: Awakening, and if you haven’t seen the trailer yet, you should. Kate Beckinsale is back to reprise her role as Selene, last seen in the second movie of the series since Underworld capped their trilogy hat with a prequel, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. In my opinion, Beckinsale and the character Selene were made for each other, and Beckinsale rocks this role harder than anything else I’ve seen her in (remember Van Helsing? Yeah, I don’t want to either).

India Eisley (The Secret Life of an American Teenager) plays Eve, and I’m interested in seeing Kristen Holden-Ried since he’s been making a name for himself, especially on the Showcase series Lost Girl where he plays a wolf shapeshifter. We assume he’ll be a werewolf in Awakening. He’s got the scruffy facial hair that seems to be required. It’s still just a rumor on whether Michael Corvin, played by Scott Speedman, will be coming back for the fourth movie.

The fourth installment in the Underworld series takes place 12 years after the second film, Underworld: Evolution. Selene is back, and we get to see her wake up from a coma in shiny high-tech facility and ready to kick some major ass—except that in the world she’s woken up in, all vampires and werewolves have been branded as an “epidemic” and a full-on war is being waged on them by humankind. But Selene isn’t the only lab rat to have escaped from the humans. There’s a child—Eve, Selene and Michael Corvin’s child—and she’s a hybrid to boot, which unfortunately means that she’s probably going to be at the top of everyone’s hit-list, and Selene will do whatever it takes to protect her.

The movie looks like it’s about protecting Eve…but I bet she probably doesn’t need as much protection as we think. C’mon, she’s a vampire/werewolf hybrid. Last I remembered, they were pretty kickass in their own right. I’m glad to see that the movie is coming out in 3D as well. Considering how beautiful and stylized the previous movies were shot, I trust the cinematography to do right by it.

Besides the trailer, a new movie poster has been released. Looks like Selene’s leather outfit will be back in action too.

Underworld: Awakening will be in theaters Jan. 20, 2012.
